eMachines M6811 Laptop (2.20 GHz Athlon 64 3400+ Mobile, 512 MB RAM, 80 BG Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW/CD-RW Drive), is made by eMachines. The list price is around US$1699.99.
If you're considering this product, please don't. It's an abysmal piece of technology. I am so unhappy with it. In 15 months, it has spent more than 4 months in the shop. The motherboard, the LCD screen, and the keyboard are all unreliable. Save yourself some pain and stay away from this product and the company that would market it.

GATEWAY MX6124 GATEWAY MX6124 PC Notebook Computer, is made by GATEWAY.
First I'll explain why I didn't give it 5 stars. It takes a while to load, maybe it's because it includes 90 days of Norton Antivirus. I use EZ Armor on my desktop and it loads way faster when you turn it on. Another thing, again Norton antivirus might be the reason why, while watching DVD's the image is not as fluid so I would guess DVD burner might have little use if you won't get good videos, and it doesn't include any video editing software, although you can burn videos with very little options on the Nero Express you get. Now It's very good when you can get it for 750 bucks and it includes 512 MB of Ram, most notbooks with that price tag give you only 256 MB. Once the computer is loaded even though it has a Celeron Processor it is very fast. - The Integrated Wi Fi card is very good, I tried it at the office today and only entered the key for accessing the network and it was off and running. Later in the day turned it on and it sign into the network automatically. - The 4 in 1 integrat...

Averatec AV3500T60-01 Tablet PC (AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD-ROM/CD-RW Drive), is made by AVERATEC. The list price is around US$1399.99.
I'm going to be blunt. I've had it for a little less than a year and have had to send it in three times. The battery life blows. The performance is'nt all that great. It's heavy for a tablet pc. It does not play dvds very well at all. The screen is the only highlight, but even it has its problems. You have to reset the stylus over and over in order for it to be precise. All of the people that give it good reviews have only had it for a month or so, but they will soon find out why there are more bad reviews than good ones. Sure its cheap, but I wonder whhy!??!! The thing is a royal piece of crap!!!!! I DO NOT RECOMEND THIS COMPUTER TO ANYONE!!!

eMachines M6810 Laptop (2.00 GHz Athlon 64 3200+ Mobile, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive), is made by eMachines. The list price is around US$1499.99.
Why would you care about the drivers? Either download the newest realtek or via drivers from www.realtek.com or www.viaarena.com. Besides that, why would you want to use Windows with this machine - windows can't even do 64-bit until 2005...
Linux is known to work well with this laptop, with fewer security and driver issues.

Sharp PCGP22W Laptop (2.20-GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive), is made by Sharp.
We purchased the Sharp GP22W from Circuit City over Dell, HP, and Compaq because of the price and its features. It had a Pentium 4 2.2 GHz, 512 DDRAM, 4 USB 2.0 ports (SIS), 802.11b wireless, 40GB Fujitsu hdd, 15" sharp XGA, and SVideo Out. However, the LCD was already damaged right out of the box! 2 pixels were bad right in the middle of the screen, not the side or the bottom, but in the middle where you can see it clearly. Also, the sound quality is awful probably because of the onboard sound (AC 97). We played a DVD movie and the sound could not be heard with the volume up all the way. We tried the same movie in my Dell Inspiron 8000 and it was loud, very loud. Be aware that the video card is also part of the motherboard (SIS) with only 16MB of video memory. It should be enough for DVD playback, but it was jerky as soon as I played it out of the box. After turning off some programs, it worked smoothly but I still couldn't hear the sound, only mediocre sound. Overall, I recommend this computer on...

Toshiba Satellite M45-S269 15.4" Laptop (Intel Pentium M Processor 740 (Centrino), 512 MB RAM, 100 GB Hard Drive, DVD SuperMulti Drive), is made by Toshiba. The list price is around US$1249.99.
We bought this computer in August, and shortly after that it started acting up. We reinstalled all software, and re formatted the hard drive in an attempt to fix it, but it didn't help. Eventually we were told by Toshiba to take it to an authorized service repair shop. They changed the motherboard, system board, dvd combo drive, & battery. After we received the laptop back, the screen would go dark and dvd combo drive still doesn't work correctly. Now the laptop has been at the repair shop for 3 months and they are waiting for a small cable to fix the screen, which Toshiba has on back order indefinitely, and they refuse to find a resolution for my problem. I have talked to Toshiba customer relations over 20 times, and they will not help me. Today one of the cutomer relations agents, Alisha, hung up on me. Toshiba just tells me to wait for the part to come in, whenever that might be, even if it take 6 or 10 months. They refuse to replace my obviously defected laptop with a new one. PLEASE, PLEASE,...

Toshiba Satellite M55-S135 14" Laptop (Intel Celeron M Processor 370, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD SuperMulti Dbl Layer Drive), is made by Toshiba. The list price is around US$950.00.
This is a great computer; the sound on this notebook is one of the best I have heard in a notebook. Toshiba's on average have great sound, but the forward facing speakers along with the SRS virtual sound give a spectacular performance for this notebook. The 80 GB Hard dive is fast, and the screen is a TruBrite which is exactly equal to an XBrite screen in other notebooks. The 14" is more intended to increase mobility and reduce weight, and it utilizes a widescreen format (1280 by 768). The downside of having this widescreen format is that other resolution like 1024 by 768 or 800 by 600 are stretched to fill the screen and this distorts the image on screen. There is an option to preserve aspect ratio but it turns off the sides of the screen and centers the screen to a minuscule 12". Basically, you have to keep the screen in a 1280 by 768 format which is very crisp and clear. Another downside is Toshiba doesn't really give you a user manual, they just give a couple booklets tell you what in exact word...

Apple PowerBook Laptop 17" M9970LL/A (1.67 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, SuperDrive), is made by Apple Computer. The list price is around US$2510.00.
I agree with the reviewers who said that there are some compromises required to slide this bad boy into a backpack or open it up in Cattle Class while flying. However, I've had mine for over three years, and am about to buy another one (I need a bigger hard drive). I love my 17" PowerBook and can't imagine switching to anything different. I have seen and tried all the other laptops around the office, and this one is still head and shoulders above other Wintel newer ones.
My current 17" PB also went off my motorbike with me in an accident a few years ago. The front left corner (hard drive!) was severely dented and the aluminum bent out of shape. I put it to sleep, took a pair of Vice Grips and a mallet to it, and pounded it back into shape. Opened the lid and started typing. Several years later, it is still working reliably. In some respects, I'd rather not get a new one, as this one has performed so well!
Two (bandaged) thumbs up!
