Olympus S711BLUE Microcassette Voice Recorder from Olympus, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$29.99. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $29.00.
I've been using this product for a good 20 years...the first one I had lasted 7 years and I've periodically replaced them as the motor dies. I continue to buy it because it works with my "old fashion" phone recording devices (I'm a writer and need to tape interviews). Many new recorders don't have the two 'holes" on top for my recording device...I hope they never stop making it...

Olympus L400 Ultra-Compact Microcassette Recorder from Olympus. The list price is around US$249.99.
I ordered this from Amazon, who had the best price on the internet or otherwise. When I received it, I spent several days thinking I might send it back. It has its problems and is a little "too" small for me. However, I've worked through the problems and gotten used to the device and it is pretty good.

First, the problems. Someone with real small hands will appreciate it. Others with bigger hands might find it too small. Those used to holding a microcassette recorder a certain way (using the thumb to work the controls for example) will have to get used to the small size. The controls on this device are electronic buttons instead of manual push buttons. But I have to shift the device up in my hands to access all the buttons with my thumb. In addition, only the rewind function works while the tape is playing. That is, you can't fast forward without stopping the tape first. Further, they didn't add a separate fast forward button, but you hit the rewind button twice to go forward. I don't really like this feat...

Sony M-2020 Microcassette Dictator and Transcriber from Sony. The list price is around US$299.99.
Arrived quickly from the seller. It was technically was as promised. Unfortunatley, performance was poor. There was a horrible motor whine. Also the recording quality was MUCH worse that my heavily used, and abused 25 dollar portable unit. My transcriptionist, who almost never complains, could not hear me well (and I dictate clearly).

Right now, my M-2020 is at Sony. I had to mail it there for service. Very hard to contact vendor. At least Sony seems to be evaluating the unit (it is under warranty for 90 days).

Sony M-670V Microcassette Voice Recorder from Sony. The list price is around US$44.99.
I would give this an "ok" rating. Its has and does the basics, but it does not record low volume levels, or quiet background sounds which is very disappointing to me. Also, its made in China, so i expect it to not work soon. When playing back you have to crank up the volume all the way to hear.
Its not really what i wanted.

Panasonic RR-830 Desktop Cassette Transcriber / Recorder from Panasonic. The list price is around US$249.95.
This product is great when working with standard cassette tapes. The only thing I don't appreciate about it, is that it is loud and does not have as many versatile options as a digital transcriber. However, in comparison to what I have worked with in the past for standard cassettes, it is a great little machine!

Panasonic RR930 Panasonic Microcassette Transcriber/Recorder from Panasonic. The list price is around US$249.95.
I have had this machine just over 1 month and have been using it between 3-5 days a week, and it worked just fine.

This morning the foot pedal decided to rewind back to the beginning of the tape every time I let my foot off it. Playback works fine if I disconnect the foot pedal, but I have to manually press play and rewind.

The rewind works really well and doesn't require a lot of repeating phrases.

Called Panasonic customer support to request a new foot pedal and got hung up on.
