Olympus L400 Ultra-Compact Microcassette Recorder from Olympus. The list price is around US$249.99.
I ordered this from Amazon, who had the best price on the internet or otherwise. When I received it, I spent several days thinking I might send it back. It has its problems and is a little "too" small for me. However, I've worked through the problems and gotten used to the device and it is pretty good.

First, the problems. Someone with real small hands will appreciate it. Others with bigger hands might find it too small. Those used to holding a microcassette recorder a certain way (using the thumb to work the controls for example) will have to get used to the small size. The controls on this device are electronic buttons instead of manual push buttons. But I have to shift the device up in my hands to access all the buttons with my thumb. In addition, only the rewind function works while the tape is playing. That is, you can't fast forward without stopping the tape first. Further, they didn't add a separate fast forward button, but you hit the rewind button twice to go forward. I don't really like this feat...

Sony M-2020 Microcassette Dictator and Transcriber from Sony. The list price is around US$299.99.
Arrived quickly from the seller. It was technically was as promised. Unfortunatley, performance was poor. There was a horrible motor whine. Also the recording quality was MUCH worse that my heavily used, and abused 25 dollar portable unit. My transcriptionist, who almost never complains, could not hear me well (and I dictate clearly).

Right now, my M-2020 is at Sony. I had to mail it there for service. Very hard to contact vendor. At least Sony seems to be evaluating the unit (it is under warranty for 90 days).

Sony M-670V Microcassette Voice Recorder from Sony, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$44.99. (*The prices are subject to change)
I would give this an "ok" rating. Its has and does the basics, but it does not record low volume levels, or quiet background sounds which is very disappointing to me. Also, its made in China, so i expect it to not work soon. When playing back you have to crank up the volume all the way to hear.
Its not really what i wanted.

Panasonic RR-830 Desktop Cassette Transcriber / Recorder from Panasonic. The list price is around US$249.95.
For the price, this is a very good product overall because it does the job capably. However, if you've used a Dictaphone or other more professional transcriber like I have, you might find the Panasonic a tad chintzy. The footpedal is indeed a relatively cheap plastic job like other reviewers have said. The two less attractive aspects of this product for me is that when you are using the foot pedal and lift your foot to stop the tape and it back spaces a bit, there is a loud 'clunk'. In our quiet office that's a problem, so i have to time my transcribing for when there are fewer people around.
Another issue i have with this one is that the power cord does not disconnect in the back. Having that ability would allow me to more easily put the transcriber away and off my desk when I'm not using it. So i was a little spoiled using the Dictaphone because I didn't have to crawl under my desk to unplug the thing in order to put it away; I could disconnect it from the back of the machine. That may be some...
