Yamaha HTR-5860SL XM-Ready 7.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Silver) from Yamaha. The list price is around US$549.99.
This is the my first "High End" receiver that I purchased. It was available via Amazon for almost half the cost as at local stores. I am totally satisfied with this receiver and am considering buying one (5.1) for my finished basement.
The microphone setup (YPAO) for the surround sound speakers was easy and perfect the first time. The user can fine tune all settings as well.
I find the 7 speaker stereo channel to be excellent for any CD or DVD that does not have 5.1. The other DSP are also excellent and can make movies sound realistic.
A great buy with no compromises.

Replaced a high-end Sony system that was 7-8 yrs old. Very impressed with ease of setup, quality and volume of sound. Takes a while to try all the different settings you can choose from. Sound is fantastic, Highly recommend

Yamaha YHT-760 XM-Ready 5.1-Channel DVD Home Theater System (Silver) from YAMAHA. The list price is around US$649.99.
I originally started my home theatre endeavor with the Yamaha YHT-160 HTIB which, in my opinion, doesn't sound as good as the Kenwood package I bought from Target over 3 years ago for less money. I returned my entry-level YHT-160 for the twice-as-costly YHT-760 thinking that it would be closer to what I was looking for. For the extra money you get better speakers, a better receiver, and a 5-disc DVD player.
RECEIVER: Honestly this is a solid unit. The controls can be a little counter-intuitive but those that learn them will be rewarded with a slew of different sound fields and options. The component inputs are also a nice feature for those that have multiple high-definition sources.
SPEAKERS: You get some standard-issue Yamaha speakers with the package. The sound is good but I was a little surpised to see paper cones. They are styled extremely well and fit in really nicely with home theatre setups that are primarily silver in color.
SUBWOOFER: This is where my jaw...

Excellent transaction. Delivery was prompt with the product as expected and in new condition. This was especially appreciated as the first selected Amazon reseller did not respond to any of my emails and I had to cancel that transaction.

Yamaha HTR-5850 XM-Ready 6.1-Channel A/V Surround Receiver (Black) from Yamaha. The list price is around US$449.99.
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT RECEIVER THAT PRODUCES 100W X 6,WITH VERY LOW DISTORTION.YOU HAVE NEARLY EVERY INPUT YOU COULD POSSIBLY NEED,IN A STANDARD HOME THEATER,SET-UP.I ALSO LIKE THAT THIS UNIT HAS A 4 OHM LOW IMPEDENCE SWITCH.THIS IS VERY HELPFUL BECAUSE MANY SPEAKERS RATED AT 8 OHMS,MAY DROP TO AS LOW AS 2 OHMS,OR EVEN LOWER.MANY AMPLIFIERS OVER-HEAT,OR GO INTO PROTECTION,OR CURRENT LIMITING.THIS COULD TURN THE AVERERGE RECEIVER INTO A 1 WATT AMPLIFER,IN THE REAL WORLD.WHEN AN AMPLIFIER CLIPS YOUR SPEAKERS MAY BE DAMAGED.ACTUALLY THE MORE CLEAN POWER YOU HAVE,THE LESS CHANCE YOU HAVE TO DAMAGE YOUR EQUIPMENT.NOW THE YAMAHA HTR5850 FITS THE BILL.IT HAS HIGH POWER, HIGH CURRENT,OUTPUT,AND LOW DISTORTION.YOU CAN ALSO LISTEN TO XM-SATELLITE RADIO.WITH AN ADDITIONAL ADAPTER.I FOUND THE YAMAHA TO BE EASY TO SET UP.THIS IS A COMPUTERIZED SET UP FOR THE SOUND,HOWEVER YOU CAN SET THINGS UP MANUALLY,IF YOU WISH.YOU SHOULD USE A Y ADAPTER FROM THE SUBWOOFER OUT TO YOUR SUBWOOFER,IF IT HAS A DUAL STEREO INPUTS.THIS IS JU...
