I was very excited to get my Garmin 750. I had never used a GPS, so I didn't know what to expect. It takes a while to find the signal. The voice commands you can hardly hear. The manual says it has a battery life of 4 hours but it never lasted me that long. I don't know, maybe I had to put it in the battery saving mode, which gets really dark and you can't hardly see. Another feature that I thought was odd, was that it didn't work while using the car charger. If you are charging it while using it on the road, it turns off. So, you better make sure it is fully charged before you hit the road and even then, it won't last you that long. Since I had never had a GPS before, I didn't know if these issues were normal. I lost mine, I don't know if I left it in a rental car or they stole it from my suitcase. Anyhow, next time I buy one, I'll make sure that you can charge it while using it and that the battery life is longer. I don't know if I should experiment with the Tom Tom or not.
a Must for the Car - and it even finds it in the parking lot

We have two .. one for each car a 760-w and 780-w.. enjoy them both and particularly like the fact that it can sync with the bluetooth cell phone.. nice feature for hands free driving. Now that is not to say that you don't have to use your mind some times it wants to take you where no car should go - winter road blocked - but if you think about what and where your going this device belongs in your travel plans. Works well to find 'eats' on the road and in town too.. enjoy

I've had this model for a couple years now, and overall, I think this is a decent product. It gets me where I need to go with only some minor hassles. A few general comments, both good, bad, and indifferent:
1. sometimes it takes a few minutes to lock onto a satellite, but once found, I've never had a problem with the connection stability. 2. The ETA calculation definitely does NOT take traffic lights into consideration. It's only accurate if you are staying on the highway (not considering traffic of course), but if you're driving through a city, you'll have to add a buffer for stop lights yourself. 3. it seems as though the database of businesses isn't always accurate. once I was literally in front of a QT gas station, and it told me the nearest gas station was a few miles away. 4. I'm not sure how the routes are calculated - I'm one of those people who uses Google Maps a lot, including for directions, so I often compare the suggested routes between the Garmin and Google, and many times, they are different - sometimes VERY different. 5. the buttons to enter letters/numbers are too small to type quickly, if you're not very precise with your typing, you will consistently have to hit the erase button to correct mistakes. 6. the battery life isn't great, at the most I may get a couple hours before needing to recharge. and the constant "low battery" warnings are amazingly annoying, but I just updated the firmware which I believe has a patch so this may have been fixed. But I can't imagine that any GPS system has great battery life, given the constant drain of satellite communication. 7. after a few years, it seems that the touchscreen has lost sensitivity - I have to press a little harder than I used to in order for it to register my input
This is the only GPS unit I've ever owned, so I can't compare it with TomTom or Magellan or those other brands, or even other Garmin units. |
Love it

Could not live with out this. I did a great deal of research on this unit before I bought it so I knew what I was getting. The common theme to the dislikes is it take a while to find the satelite (I have not found that to be an issue) and it could be a little more intuitive when putting in the address information (I would agree, but it really is not that bad). The main reason I bought this unit was for my motorcycle, this unit has the voice and an MP3 jack that I can plug into my stereo on the bike and I never have to look down. Work great.

New Features -- Where Am I? Where's My Car?
The nüvi 700 series is the first to answer two common questions: "Where am I?" and "Where’s my car?"
At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. And to help drivers find their car in an unfamiliar spot or vast parking lot, all nüvi 700s automatically mark the position in which they were last removed from the mount.
New Features -- Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).
A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.
See Better, See More
The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.
The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.
