LED Lighting

LED Lighting

I've been using LED light in my flash for a while. My computer was also lighted up by LED and so is my watch. They were the best light source I've seen. It was bright, long lasting and energy efficient. A flash powered by a single AA battery is bright enough for me to hike at night. Imagine what they could do in our home? They are the best solution to green house effect (imagine how much energy we waste in our regular lighting). I've been wondering a long time: why didn't they put LED in home lighting?

Then I read the CNet's article about LED Lighting. Wow, finally, somebody was doing that now. It was about time. It's not a new technology. They have been using LED for ages. What take them so long to replace regular light bulb with LED?

The manufacture of the LED was Cyberlux. Their technology looked extremely promising. They have been selling emergency lights to government and the military (I assumed they have some regular contracts). They are also announcing that they would be selling the home LED lighting in Wal-Mart, Targets and HomeDepot. It looks like a very promising company. They are also a publicly traded company with trading symbol CYBL. I thought it was going to be a soaring stock with price hype up to the roof and I wouldn't mind owning few share of those, seeing their technology are so promising. Then I checked their stock price and …..

The technology looks good but the stock itself looks extremely depressing. My warning LED light up in my brain, caution me not to touch this kind of stock. I've bought this type of companies before and it didn't end well.

The stock price is only 0.029, a penny stock, not a good sign. It was dropped from 0.12 just a year ago, a very bad sign. The company never made a profit (bad, but not a problem for start-up). And the company has a large debt, again bad sign.
Here's some links to their financial statements:

I really like the technology, not just because they are energy friendly, but it's also because it made so much business sense to buy these lighting, consider the PR image for big corporations to replace their current lightening with the LED system, consider the prevailing "sustainability" trend, consider people's fear of climatic change (because of Al Gore's Movies and also because of the recent climatic anomaly). LED made lots of sense, as long as they fit into the current incandescent light sockets. If they sell those in Canada, I'll be the first one to buy them.

But to buy their stock is another issue. It depends on how they manage their business. They licensed the patent for LED, so I would assume they won't have too much competitor, or will they? They needs lots of Government contracts to break even with their research cost. Do they have enough money to bribe the government officials (there are so many legal ways to bribe the government officials nowadays). It's not hard to imagine if some government department promise to change all the regular lighting/emergency lights to the Cyberlux system and have some green PR campaign (since those are pretty voters friendly). There are lots of potentials. I'll wait and see. I may even consider buying their stocks if they show any sign of life.
