Reviews:| Rating 4.5/5 from 160 reviews | | Expensive, but worth it | | Rating: 5/5 2010-07-11 | It's not cheap, but it's worth it. I bought it just before going to 3-week vacation. I took my 10-22mm and 24-105mm lenses with me. Ended up using 24-105mm 99% of time (used 10-22mm for maybe 2 or 3 out of almost 1000 photos I made during my trip). The wide end is not really wide on cameras with APS-C sized sensors (hardly 38mm equivalent on cameras with full frame sensors). However the zoom range is still more than usable. It was only occasional that I wished I had wider lens on the camera (but usually not sufficiently to actually bother switching the lens). However, I'd still advise having an wide angle lens in backpack for walking around.
Image stabilization worked great, and I made many low-light photos that would not be possible without it.
Build quality is great. Focusing is fast. Images are ultra sharp. The only small objection is that the lens is a bit heavy. But I guess it goes with the build quality.
This lens will be spending a lot of time mounted on my camera (an old Canon Digital Rebel). | | Very good lens | | Rating: 5/5 2010-06-27 | | I was looking for a really sharp all around lens with image stabilization. This lens fits the bill. I consistently see great results in my photography; better all around sharpness and color. My only complaint is the lens could have been cheaper. | | Great lens! | | Rating: 5/5 (3 out of 3 think this is helpful) 2010-05-31 | I just love my new toy, a 24-105 F/4L lens. I am new to photography and I really had to learn about upgrading equipment especially lenses the hard and expensive way. I started out last December 2009, purchased a 500D/Rebel T1i with a kit lens. After a month, I sold my kit lens and got my self a 28-135 IS USM. After a month, sold that lens to get a 17-85 IS USM. After another month, sold the 2nd lens to purchase an 18-135 IS lens. And then after another month, sold that lens to get a Tokina 28-70 f/2.8. Think of all the money I wasted.
I started to read a lot of reviews concerning Canon's L series lenses and found this one (24-105L) to be a great general purpose lens for new hobbyists like myself. So I sold my Tokina and finally decided to (bite the bullet) purchase one yesterday. Oh boy! this lens just rocks! I love the following:
1. Picture Quality (colors are so much more defined) 2. Build Quality (it's built like a tank and is weather sealed) 3. Mid-range weight 4. Mid range zoom 5. IS and USM of course 6. The large hood (included) 7. The pouch (included)
To me, the only things I ranted about is the lack of additional f/stop (2.8) for low light conditions and the steep price.
So please learn from my experience, stop wasting your money on mid-level lenses if you plan to purchase an L lens someday. Just save up, practice on your kit lens and a 50mm prime f/1.8. If you've saved up enough, go and get this lens, or any particular L lens that you fancy. BUT, nothing, I mean nothing can match the versatility of the 24-105mm F/4L lens.
Canon, thank you for making this lens. =) | | Good with 40D | | Rating: 4/5 (1 out of 2 think this is helpful) 2010-05-25 | Strong, heavy and feels solid. Can take good portrait pictures with clean subjects. wide angle can get a little skewed, f/4 all the way to 105mm is an advantage. I am considering a larger f stop to go with this one, preferably at 50mm or so.
I use it with 40D and I like it.
The hood can cast a shadow on the pictures if not careful. | | problem lens | | Rating: 3/5 (5 out of 19 think this is helpful) 2010-05-05 | | I have been using canon equipment for donkey years now and was just about to buy this lens when a very helpful staff in my usual photo shop told me about the problem with the diaphragm. It very often gets stuck, but not within the first year of use, sometimes in the second or after the second year of use (when you have no more warranty).I then went to the repair centre and spoke to the head engineer and he confirmed the problem. What do you do when this happens? YOu need to get a new diaphragm - usually out of your own pocket. Canon has apparently addressed the problem and came up with a new diaphragm, but the engineer said it was only better than the old, but still not perfect. Apparently these 'new diaphragm cameras' are mixed in with the old ones and so there is no way of knowing what you buy. the dealers don't know either which is which. Now, this put a big damper on this lens. No matter how good it is when it works, it is only as good as its weakest link. shame on Canon! I just had a problem with my 5D mirror. In the hot desert of India, it just fell off.... the nearest repair centre was a night's train ride away once you got to a train. IF this happens with the lens, I don't want to think about the consequences. Does Canon think one should carry around 2 of them, so one has a backup lens? Very disappointing. |
Editorials:Product DescriptionThe L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, designed to include outstanding image performance, ultimate operability and weather resistance. The EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM offers a lightweight alternative to the renowned EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. offers the highest possible optical quality with no change in aperture over the full focal range of the lens. This allows photographers to set exposure at the widest aperture and zoom all the way through to 105mm without having to vary the shutter speed. Image Stabilizer (IS) dramatically reduces image blur caused by camera shake. Gyro sensors detect unwanted vibrations, triggering the corresponding movement of a correcting lens group perpendicular to the optical axis. This alters the light path, returning the image to its correct position on the sensor or film plane. The 3 stop advantage means that photographers normally shooting a 105mm lens handheld at 1/125 sec can obtain a shake free result with a shutter speed as low as 1/15 sec, for vastly extended options in low light conditions. The ring-type USM motor found in the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM employs ultra-sonic frequency vibrations to drive auto focus with unrivalled speed and near-silent operation. A powerful CPU and improved AF algorithm contribute to speed performance. Good holding torque stops the lens with precision and accuracy, the instant it arrives at the correct focus point and without overshoot. Photographers can choose manual focus instantly and at any time simply by moving the manual focus ring without first having to switch out of auto focus mode. Circular aperture producing attractive background defocus Inner focusing, ring USM and new AF algorithms for fast and quiet autofocusing Manual focusing enabled even during AF mode (full-time mechanical manual focus) Only environmentally friendly lead-free glass used in lens construction Filter diameter 77 mm / Dimensions (dia x len)
