Garmin Nuvi 255 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator, is made by Garmin, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$319.99. (*The prices are subject to change) Street price is around $299.99.
This is the newest Garmin Entry model, NUVI 205 (3.5" with less map), NUVI 255 (3.5") and NUVI 255W (4.3") to replace the older NUVI 200, NUVI 250 and NUVI 250W respectively.
The new feature is text to speech... It speaks the street name instead of just left or right turn. It is only a software feature. They have to wait so long to "switch it on" for the lower models.
It is also darker, with an "improved" interface. I heard that the newer models are a little sluggish but I haven't tested it myself, so I'm not sure about the rumor. There is also a new elevation map feature. So it will display maps in 3D with elevation? I am not sure if that's sure. I will update this blog when I get more information.

Magellan Maestro 4050 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator, is made by Magellan. The list price is around US$799.99.
No, this is not your perfect GPS. But with a price tag of $249, this can be the perfect GPS in the price range. Although the navigation and routing is lagging behind Garmin, Magellan does have a better POI database, and the hard to beat AAA tour book. Yes, the AAA tour book is not linked to the POI, but it can become rather handy in your next road trip.
The 4050 also has a innovative but useless voice command. It pick up most of the voices, but most of the time is not good enough. The experience is as annoying as dealing with a touch screen that works only 90% of the time. Even with a 10% failure, the feature will still be useless to most people. It may be a good selling point, but hardly a practical useful feature.
The route exclusion feature in 4050 (or 4040) is pretty lame. And the unit feels less responsive than the Garmin models. Hourglass, how the hell they dare to put hourglass in a GPS units. All the clumsiness of the Windows CE platform is inherited in this Magellan GPS unit.

Garmin eTrex Vista HCx Color High-Sensitivity Mapping Handheld GPS, is made by Garmin, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$299.99. (*The prices are subject to change)
This is one of the items in my "wish list". I like it for a very peculiar feature, the one that is not even advertised. This is the only unit on the market that is good for long term geocoding for my photos. Many other units can write tracklogs but this one can write the track logs on to the mini sd card, so I have infinite space to store my tracklogs. I have used other units, the track logs were full after one or two weeks. But usually my vacation is 5 to 6 weeks, so none of them can store that much in their track logs.
Another reason I like this unit is because it have very good GPS reception. The reception for walking unit is more important than the automobile GPS which usually have unblocked views to the sky. This walking unit need to stay tuned even under heavy trees.
I have an eTrex Venture back in 2002, but it was broken in about a year. I hope this unit is more solid. The weakest point is the joystick, it's so fragile. And it's true for all electronic units using joystick. They sim...

Garmin nüvi 780 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator, is made by Garmin, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$799.99. (*The prices are subject to change)
Of all the GPS in the same price range, Garmin has the least feature to offer but also cause you the least headache. If all you want is a navigation system that gets you from point A to point B, Garmin is your best choice. It consistently choose the best route (save you a couple miles/minutes compare to other GPS), and usually has the best map coverage. Magellan sometimes has better POI coverage and more easily accessible. Magellan also has a more feature rich user interface (e.g. volume adjusted according to speed, an innovative way of selecting address by highlighting only the available keys, exit POI and the extremely helpful AAA tour book etc). Garmin has none of those but has the no nonsense, dirt easy GUI even your mom can use.
If you have made up your mind to choose a Garmin GPS, which one should you buy?
Nuvi 200? Nuvi 250w? Nuvi350? Nuvi660? Nuvi780?
Here is a list of all the available features:
Nuvi 200 - 3.5" screen, Cheapest, Map Cover USA or Canada, but not both.<...

Garmin Colorado 400c Handheld GPS Unit with US Coastal Waters Preloaded Maps, is made by Garmin, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$639.99. (*The prices are subject to change)
very disappointed with the brightness level and size of the screen. What genius though of REDUCING the brightness of this screen versus the previous model just to save battery juice? (that was the explanation the Garmin people gave me when I complained) I found it HARDLY READABLE under most circumstances and practically unreadable in way too many. The interface is weird as well, the scroll wheel should work but they made access to common functions go through too many steps. I am re-selling mine on eBay. Just so you don't think I am some kind of Garmin hater I have their 5212 chartplotter and that is absolutely GREAT, way above the Raymarine and others, even if the jumping between menus could be simplified, ie who ever thought of putting MOB (Man OverBoard)in a secondary level of menus that would take you three menu selections to get to? When you have the need you won't have the time to go through three levels of selection!!!

Garmin Colorado 400t Handheld GPS Unit with US Topographic Preloaded Maps, is made by Garmin, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$639.99. (*The prices are subject to change)
I worked with this product extensively for two weeks on a trip to the Southwest, and it's just too buggy to be useful. Sometimes geocache logs show up; sometimes they don't. About 20% of the time, it won't even navigate to a given geocache; you have to enter the coordinates manually using the little scroll wheel. (Hardly a painless process.)
The idea of paperless geocaching is great, but the 400t just doesn't implement it in an usable way. I've already mentioned the straight out bugs in the product; the UI design is awful as well. I got a copy of the Garmin's street database to use the 400t for finding my way around; good luck! If you're navigating to a location and do pretty much anything (check out a local geocache, for example), you have to start navigating all over again -- including going through the not inconsiderable pain of entering your desired destination without a keyboard.
Garmin's documentation is pretty much nonexistent (as others have indicated) [...]

Garmin Colorado 300 Bilingual Handheld GPS Unit with North American Maps, is made by Garmin, Usually ships in 24 hours. The list price is around US$533.32. (*The prices are subject to change)
This replaced my 60csx. The detail on the screen is a big improvement. NIMH battery performance has improved with recent firmware upgrades. The back cover is extremely hard to get on and off. After a couple of weeks of daily use, the back battery seal tore. Garmin support via email (3 day response time) said I had to return it for warranty repair. Instead I took it back to REI and they exchanged it no problem. This happened again and am now on my third one. Now, I never fully close the back cover unless I am in a situation where it could be submersed in water. This has prevented the seal from tearing, and makes the back cover much easier to get on and off. Also you do not have to remove the carabiner to get the cover off with this method. TOPO and City Navigator work great! I recommend this unit but be careful with the back cover!

I recceived the Magellan Maestro 3200 for Father's Day and it was the best gift. This unit is easy to use and simple. I would highly recommend it. My wife did a lot of research on GPS systems and this one suited our needs.

Magellan Maestro 3250 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator
Unit works very well. Very clear screen and excellent detail. You can ask the unit to give the nearest gas station or eatery, or ATM. If your a Tripe AAA Motorclub member they are giving an extra year warranty coverage until the end of July 2008. Call Triple AAA get the code and register it on line through Tripe A. Magellan is offering a Free year of traffic service find it under the traffic enabled units on there website. Really a neat unit and works well. If you listen to a loud radio you may need to turn it down to ask Magellan questions. Gets you to where you are going with ease. Have not used the Bluetooth yet but it wanted to pair up with my phone. I have heard positive words that feature works pretty well meaning most phones. I have a Garmin C330 and this Maestro 3250 is much nicer.
